Christian Faith Issues Book Group
A new 'Christian Faith Issues' book group has recently started in Templepatrick - it is run on an informal basis and is open to all. The aim of the group is to invite authors to discuss their books and to answer any questions readers may have concerning specific points raised in the book, or more general issues pertinent to the topic tackled. There is no formal membership.
It will of course be advantageous if you've read either part or all of the publication prior to the discussion, but you are also very welcome to come along if you're simply interested in the subject area.

Year Published: 2005

About the Author
Alf McCreary is an award winning journalist and author who writes extensively on Irish affairs. He has won two British National Press awards.
About the Book
This is the pilgrimage of an Irish Primate during years of dramatic change - a man who had to come to terms with a religious role no theological training could prepare him for. An academic lawyer, his life was transformed when the Irish question began to erupt. In the years that followed he found himself thrust into a cauldron of change and revolution, and the birth of a new Ireland. In the course of those momentous years he became the confidant of Prime Ministers, politicians and world figures. Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Albert Reynolds became his acquaintances. The Downing Street declaration, the Anglo-Irish Agreement and confidential briefings in London and Dublin, demanded his attention. The negotiation of a ceasefire called on his legal experience. The Peace Process became his real test. This biography is a frank analysis of a fascinating period of history through the eyes of a man whose feelings and sympathies for his own community were tested by the realities of violent political change.

About the Book
No country has discarded religion faster than Ireland. Priests are the most demoralised people. This title argues that Irish experience has news for the fundamentalists, who think nothing ever changes - but also for the hard atheists, who don't understand religious culture from the inside.

Thursday 30th April - "The Orange Order: A Tradition Betrayed"
By Brian Kennaway
Author: Brian Kennaway
ISBN: 0413776409
Publisher: Methuen
Year Published: 2007
Extent: 352pp
Casing: Paperback (Hardback also available)
About the Author
Rev. Brian Kennaway has been a senior member of the Orange Order for over 40 years. For 25 years he was a member of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, and was convenor of its Education Committee from 1992 until 2000, when he felt finally forced to leave. For thirty-two years, Brian was minister of Crumlin Presbyterian Church and retired in January 2009.
About the Book
Established in Ireland in 1795, the Orange Order aimed to promote Protestantism and celebrate the memory of William of Orange. But religious and political allegiances were inseparable. Today the Order has around 30,000 active members, increasingly identified with an unyielding Unionism expressed in the thousands of marches it stages each year, all too often the flashpoint for violence. For Orangeism, like Unionism, is at a crossroads, and a long way from the peaceful tolerance it preaches.
The Reverend Brian Kennaway has been for years one of Orangeism's most senior and outspoken members, only leaving the Order's Education Committee when he felt that internal loyalty and short-term political gain had become more important to its leadership than anything. His remarkable book takes the lid off a secret society that has lost its moral direction, but not its capacity for intrigue, influence or coercion. He documents in detail the internal struggles of the Order up to the present day, revealing for the first time the hypocrisies it strives to present as principles. Written more in sorrow than in anger but with absolute authority, the result is a revelatory volume to stand comparison for its personal bravery and political importance with Sean O'Callaghan's The Informer. It will be essential reading for everyone wishing better to understand Northern Ireland today, or for a better Northern Ireland tomorrow.
'A bleakly honest and shocking account of how a great institution was led into a moral and political wilderness by fools and knaves' - Ruth Dudley Edwards, author of The Faithful Tribe
'A devastating critique...brave, illuminating book...Kennaway has had the courage to expose hypocrisy thoughout this important book' Observer
'Devastating and timely...an important, sad, clear-sighted and brave insider view, written by a man who refuses to keep quiet while the values he believes in are trampled underfoot' Glasgow Herald
'A work of great and detailed scholarship' - Chris Ryder

About the Book
The Northern Ireland peace process is seen as a model for other peace processes; this book provides an original perspective on it.It offers new perspectives on the role of a 'strong' religion (such as evangelical Protestantism or other forms of fundamentalism) in conflict transformation. This is increasingly important as the role of strong religions in contemporary conflicts around the world becomes clear. The Northern Ireland peace process is seen as a model for other peace processes; this book provides an original perspective on it. With both a strong theoretical and ethnographic approach, this book contributes to our understanding of how religious identities and the political goals of religious actors change over time. It provides new understanding of how evangelical politics work in the US, Canada and Northern Ireland. This innovative book explores the role of evangelical religion in the conflict in Northern Ireland, including how it may contribute to a peaceful political transition. Ganiel offers an original perspective on the role of a 'strong' religion in conflict transformation, and the misunderstood role of evangelicalism in the process.
